Authorities in Berkshire are finding new opportunities opening up through the success of the Safer Steps scheme being rolled out across the county.
As the distribution is under way in Slough, Keith Beasley has reported that over 20 new Key Stage 2 assemblies have been generated allowing him to engage with around 4,500 pupils in 16 schools.
Year 3 children of St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, Farnham Road, Slough, receive their Safer Steps packages from local RSO Keith Beasley.
Safer Steps is a pedestrian training package, aimed at Year 3 upwards, which is being used across the county. Combining low cost workbook and DVD elements that parents can work through together with their children, Safer Steps allows children to progress systematically through a range of road crossing scenarios. Starting with fundamentals, the materials progress to include more complex road junctions and signal controlled crossings.
Commenting on the scheme Keith commented “We feel it is essential that parents take an active role in their child’s road safety education and the Safer Steps pack provides an ideal opportunity for this. By conducting assemblies with the children at the same time as handing out the packs I am able to fire up their enthusiasm to go away and complete the books.”
The characters from the DVD are illustrated in the book so children enjoy working through the two elements together. Our experience reveals that children are willing to watch the DVD over and over again in conjunction with the workbook which also encourages active participation. With areas to record when the child has completed certain activities under adult supervision, there is also a certificate that can be completed at the end of the process and awarded to the child for working through all the material.
Throughout the material, children are encouraged to reflect back the things that they have learned in order to evidence that they have assimilated the information. This approach could make Safer Steps a useful follow-up to a school visit or classroom assembly.
